Special Requirements of Position:
This is a responsible position of moderate complexity. Applicant must be able to provide academic and physical educational instruction to youth ranging in age from 7 � 12 years old. Incumbent will assist with the daily operations of the summer enrichment camp and/or the youth after-school program. The employee will work under the direction of the Supervisor III and/or the Community Resource Center�s Manager.
Kind of Work / Essiential Functions (This is descriptive, not restrictive as to all tasks included in this position):
Teach students academic, social and motor skills.
Prepare course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of program.
Plan individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, social and motor skills such as learning to listen to instructions, playing with others, and using play and/or computer equipment.
Lectures, demonstrates, and uses audiovisual teaching aids to present subject matter to students.
Assist students with his/her computer skills, reading, standardized test taking, and special projects.
Teaches students proper rules of conduct.
Maintains order in classroom, playgrounds, on field trips and other areas.
Instruct children in personal hygiene and self-care.
Counsels camp participants when and if problems arise.
Discusses pupils� academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents.
Keep attendance and conduct records.
Assist with program marketing, registration, eligibility determinations, and participant enrollment.
Help children develop habits of caring for their own clothing, appearance, and picking up and putting away supplies, toys and books.
Assist youth according to personal knowledge and experience with computers.
Provide motivational and developmental counseling to youth as needed.
Observes and inspects all computers to ensure that the computers are operable.
Assist youth with academic enrichment assignments, acting as a mentor.
Assist with recreational portion of the program for example (games, field trips and interaction with other organizations).
Work Environment/Hours Worked:
Required to work within a youth training/educational environment. Workday will primarily consist of 4 � 5 days per week and generally will not exceed seventeen (17) hours per week. Typical hours are from 3:30p.m-6:00p.m 4 days per week, Monday-Thursday. Work hours may vary in accordance with prescribed activities. Weekend and evening work may be required in support of department program offerings during the planning period or special events. The program and work schedule follows the Jefferson Parish Public School system work schedule.
Communication Skills:
Must have the ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing. Must be able to communicate effectively and pleasantly with children and the public.
Equipment Used:
Computers, telephone, fax and copy machines. May be required to drive a City van at times. Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver�s License.
Physical Involvement:
Standing is required most of the time. Sitting and walking are frequently required to accomplish required duties. Bending, squatting, reaching, climbing and carrying are required frequently. Lifting up to thirty (30) pounds is required occasionally.
Mental Involvement:
Must understand and interpret written and verbal instructions in English from Supervisor. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Human Relations Involvement:
Must be able to work compatibly in-group settings. Must be able to respond positively to supervision and to accept suggestions for improvement. Must deal courteously and tactfully with the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicant must have verifiable experience working with youth.
Certified teachers preferred, but not required.
Concentration in Math and Language arts desired.
Elementary certification preferred.
Applicant must be able to speak clearly in English.
Must possess a BS in Education from an accredited college or university or at least 2 years at a verifiable college with copy of transcript provided.
Verifiable work experience with youth in an educational setting.
Must possess working knowledge of a personal computer.
Knowledge of Business English and Spelling required.
Applicant must possess a valid Driver�s License.
Desirable Qualifications:
Computer knowledge is required. Position requires self-motivation.
